The 2016-17 Premier League was the 25th season of the Premier League, the top flight of English club football since its establishment in 1992.
Leicester City entered as the defending champions. Burnley, Middlesbrough and Derby County entered as the three teams promoted from the 2015-16 Football League Championship.
On May 21, 2017, Tottenham Hotspur became champions on the last matchday of the season by defeating Liverpool 2-1 at White Hart Lane while both Manchester United and Manchester City lost as well, giving them the title one point clear of previous leader United on the final matchday. It was their first Premier League title and first English title since 1961. Two Spurs players, Harry Kane and Dele Alli, scored more than 30 goals, and Alli won the PFA Player of the Year Award.
On May 6, Norwich City became the first team officially relegated to the 2017-18 Championship. On May 13, both Derby County and Crystal Palace were officially relegated as well.
Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool all qualified to the 2017-18 Champions League by virtue of finishing in the top four. Chelsea, in fifth, and West Ham United, in sixth, both qualified for the UEFA Europa League by virtue of their final positions, while Manchester City's second consecutive win in the League Cup and Liverpool's victory in the FA Cup gave seventh-place Leicester City a place in the Europa League as well.
The season was notable as the last one for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who resigned after Arsenal finished ninth in the Premier League. Mauricio Pochettino was named Manager of the Year for guiding Spurs to a first place finish.
