The 2017 College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship was played on January 9, 2017 and served as the final game of the 2016-17 bowl season and culminated with the crowning of the 2017 NCAA Division I FBS national champion. It was played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
The game featured the champions of pre-determined playoff bowl games. The participants were the #1 Clemson Tigers, appearing in the game under coach Dabo Swinney for a second straight year, who had defeated the #4 Houston Cougars 27-24 in the Peach Bowl on January 31st, facing off against the #2 LSU Tigers, coached by Les Miles, who defeated the #3 Stanford Cardinal 26-17 in the Fiesta Bowl.
The 13-1 LSU Tigers won the game 38-27 behind a 271-yard rushing game from running back Leonard Fournette, defeating the undefeated Clemson Tigers led by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Deshaun Watson. It was the second straight year that the Tigers went undefeated in the regular season only to be defeated by a one-loss SEC team.
